Buffer Festival is the annual showcase of YouTube video premieres, bringing the most acclaimed digital creators and their audiences together. We have always supported Buffer as a unique event in the online video space, celebrating the quality of the content over celebrity of the “YouTuber”. Creators and fans alike get the full cinematic and red carpet experience with films being shown on the big screen and a palpable crowd reaction that you just don’t get in the comments section on YouTube.
As our second time in attendance we had a strong representation from The Narrative family this year, premiering films and performing which inspired everyone to raise their game...
MISSION SELFIE SCREENING
We hosted a packed screening for Mission Selfie which Ben vlogged (you can check it out here). As Mission Selfie is nearing its worldwide release later this month, Buffer Festival made the series an official selection to the festival. As incredible as our Mission Selfie journey has been so far, there’s just nothing like seeing it on a cinema screen.
FILM TIP: For those of you budding filmmakers, normally when we upload to YouTube, our videos get compressed and the final product is never exactly how it was originally shot. By exporting to specific technical specs: Apple ProRes 422 HQ, 1920x1080p, 23.976, we are able to view the series in its full glory; it really felt like we were watching the show for the first time, again.
Prior to the screening, the filmmakers are asked to present the film. Instead of doing it the normal way, we had Adrian Bliss presenting Mission Selfie in his full Vlune persona to warm the crowd up. We closed with a fun Q & A including Lawrence, Nick, Ben, Adrian, Jake and Steve.
NOT A ROLE MODEL WITH SULI BREAKS
Last year, Suli was the featured performer at Buffer Festival’s Gala event and delivered one of the most inspirational performances dedicated to the YouTube creator community. This year, Suli was asked to kick off Buffer Festival as the first event (also in Ben’s vlog here). Audience members were laughing out loud and visibly moved as Suli masterfully translated his 90-minute Not A Role Model show for the Buffer Festival special. You can watch a selection of his spoken word featured in the tour and even more over on his channel here.
THE ARTIC SCREENING WITH BEN BROWN, TIM KELLNER AND ASTRONAUT CHRIS HADFIELD
Earlier this year, Commander Chris Hadfield and his son film producer Evan Hadfield brought together 12 artists from a variety of fields to capture an aspect of the Arctic. Representing the filmmakers were Ben and Tim who each created their own take of their Arctic adventure. (You can watch Ben's here and Tim's here.) After the films screened, Commander Hadfield, Evan, Ben and Tim took to the stage for a panel discussion that stimulated minds and inspired the hearts to look after our planet in a new light.
NEO COFFEE WITH STEVE BOOKER, JAKE EVANS AND ALEXIA BOOKER
Steve has travelled the world over to visit the best coffee shops and meeting the founders who run them. As extreme as Steve may go with coffee, he went even further this time with Neo Coffee. The Toronto based cafe serves their coffee with famous Japanese rollcakes. The film not only features the roasting process of the coffee or the baking of the cakes, we get to meet the coffee suppliers themselves, De Mello Palheta.
NIAGARA FALLS WITH BUFFER FESTIVAL FRIENDS, NEW AND OLD
The best part of YouTube is the community. It’s where a group of misfits can get together and truly be themselves. And after each of these big events, oftentimes a group organizes a fun trip to build the bonds that create friendships for life. This time, Corey and his team at Buffer Festival helped organize a trip with Niagara Parks to visit the wondrous Niagara Falls.
The day featured everything from taking a boat ride into the waterfall, taking an exhilarating zipline ride above the falls and a wonderful dessert display from behind the waterfall down below. It’s one of those days you’ll never forget and we can’t thank Buffer Festival and Niagara Parks enough for the incredible day.
